Mine Fire Struck at Southwest Lumber Yard by Unknowns

Last evening a mine at the Southwest Company lumber yard was set on fire near Beartown entrance. The blaze spread through old lumber about 200 feet from the main building and burned into Tuesday morning before crews regained control. No injuries reported. investigators suspect striker involvement.

Fredericksburg Virginia September 2 Richard Alexander Shelton arrived at his sister Mrs Will Shelton’s home in Stafford after more than fifty years away. Born near White Oak Stafford county he enlisted in 1848 and served in the Mexican war. Miners In Shootout at Handley Saloon

A shooting at Ara Thompsons saloon in Handley yesterday afternoon left four miners injured. Albert Cochran, a non union miner, fought with James Doss and Albert Nelson. Cochran fired at Doss after striking him, Nelson returned fire, Cochran was hit in the hip. A railroad man nearby was struck but escaped serious harm when a hook in his pocket deflected the bullet. Doss sustained only a facial blow. The incident stirred miners before calm returned.
