Last evening a mine at the Southwest Company lumber yard was set on fire near Beartown entrance. The blaze spread through old lumber about 200 feet from the main building and burned into Tuesday morning before crews regained control. No injuries reported. investigators suspect striker involvement.

Fredericksburg Virginia September 2 Richard Alexander Shelton arrived at his sister Mrs Will Shelton’s home in Stafford after more than fifty years away. Born near White Oak Stafford county he enlisted in 1848 and served in the Mexican war. Believed dead for decades he traveled widely and recently received a Kansas City Missouri letter prompting his long awaited return. He is in good health and has seen much of the world.
A shooting at Ara Thompsons saloon in Handley yesterday afternoon left four miners injured. Albert Cochran, a non union miner, fought with James Doss and Albert Nelson. Cochran fired at Doss after striking him, Nelson returned fire, Cochran was hit in the hip. A railroad man nearby was struck but escaped serious harm when a hook in his pocket deflected the bullet. Doss sustained only a facial blow. The incident stirred miners before calm returned.
The Wabash Railroad aims to secure a free right of way for a branch through southwestern Pennsylvania into West Virginia. Citizens of Ashington and Waynesburg raise 100000 for the route. Morgantown Railroad in West Virginia linked to the plan. Freight yards proposed at Bishop and Hickory with shops and roundhouses at Bishop. bridgeville possible. Hickory yard cost cited as 2700000. Multiple local businessmen sign ten year freight contracts.
P Sutphin of Putnam county allegedly issued checks totaling about 4500 for cattle bought and sold for cash. Checks on Karwha Valley Bank, routed to Patwin County Bank at Hurricane, bounced as Sutphin had no funds. He sold personal property and leased his wife’s farm for two years. she left with him recently.

New York on September 2 Senator Platt stated the coal strike will end within two weeks. When pressed for details he refused further explanation saying the prior statement is all he will offer. He added he cannot be more positive and suggested national Republican leaders would settle the matter.
In Nanticoke the Bliss mine of the Delaware Lackawanna and Western Coal Company resumes operation, part of five mines active for the company. About 500 Italian mine workers walked 45 miles from White Haven to Wilkes Barre seeking Labor Day parade access after contractors refused a holiday, then many joined the parade despite quitting work.
The Fleming brothers George and Creed were arrested in Virginia and jailed in Pike County Kentucky on murder and related charges. George is accused of murder and bigamy, keeping two women in one house since spring. Creed faces several lesser charges. They are linked to the Fleming family tied to the 1891 Mullins killings.
