Six more COVID deaths reported in region
Six more COVID related deaths were reported in the area including a 34 year old man from Monroe County. The DHHR dashboard also listed a 74 year old woman and an 82 year old man from Mercer County and a 78 year old man from Mercer County plus a 77 year old woman from McDowell County. Total state deaths rose to 3106. Monroe County reports the second highest infection rate with rising active cases and virtual learning in effect with classrooms slated to resume Sept 7. Mercer County records 611 active cases as McDowell counts continue.

Hurley Evacuation Ordered After Potential Mudslide
In Hurley Virginia residents along Hurley Road were told to evacuate due to a possible mudslide as authorities assess risk after flash floods from Ida damaged or destroyed homes. Chief Deputy Eric Breeding said 20 homes were destroyed or damaged by the flooding, roads were washed out, and power outages occurred as responders arrived Monday morning amid heavy rain. Volunteers collected relief supplies for affected residents and efforts continued to aid those left homeless.
