A Workforce West Virginia Investment Council report shows state oil and gas employment up 20 percent from 2011 to 2012, adding 2,123 jobs for a total of 12,666. Growth centers in the Northern Panhandle and north-central West Virginia with Marcellus activity, plus gains in pipeline and storage tank construction. Average annual wage rose about $5,500 to $75,580 in 2012.

In Green Valley 38 Mercer County JROTC cadets students and friends dressed as zombies for the fourth annual Zombie Bowl at Green Valley Bowling Center. Nick Blevins 13 a Montcalm Middle School student joined the fun saying it was his first time bowling. Sgt First Class Paul Dorsey notes the event is a twice yearly tradition and aims to provide a fun activity for cadets.
Trick or treat hours vary across Bluefield Richlands Pocahontas Bluewell Princeton Athens Bramwell and Welch on October 31 with times from 5:30 to 8 PM and some variants such as trunk or Gary City Hall and no door to door events. Princeton Times notes 1:30 to 5:30 PM and Mercer Street project at 6 PM.
Area law enforcement from West Virginia and Virginia plan extra Halloween patrols Thursday evening to boost kid safety and curb misbehavior. Sgt. A P Christian notes increased vigilance on roads for children and lawbreakers. Tazewell County Sheriff Brian Hieatt states deputies will patrol, and Deputy Glen Keen will hand out safety bags to fifth graders while offering tips at elementary schools and sheriff’s office. Mercer County Sheriff Don Meadows confirms additional patrols though reports kids have behaved well recently.
