U S forces enter broad readiness after Adm Moorer orders staged alerts while denying mobilization. Kissinger cites Soviet activity and peacekeeping talks as trigger. 6th Fleet and carriers in the Mediterranean, Iwo Jima and Guadalcanal deployed.
The Security Council voted 14 to 0 to create a United Nations emergency force for the Middle East that would exclude Soviet, American, or other major power troops. Seventy-seven U.N. troops from Austria Finland and Sweden were ordered deployed under Maj. Gen. Ensio Siilasquo to oversee the cease-fire alongside the existing observer force. The move aims to avert a U S Soviet confrontation while supporting prior cease-fire appeals.
A House resolution urges President Nixon to keep U S combat troops out of the Middle East without Congress approval. Rep William J Scherle says any commitment abroad should have Congressional authorization and notes the upcoming veto override vote on the war powers limit bill.
West Virginia State Senator Louise Leonard said the West Virginia Civil Liberties Union is out of touch with most residents. Ford and the UAW bargained late into Thursday with voluntary overtime blocking a contract for 185,000 workers. A Local 600 source said Ford offered but found voluntary overtime unacceptable while retirement after 25 years for 9,000 foundry workers remained unresolved.
A Radford Virginia witness testified in the Glenn W Turner mail fraud trial that as many as 20 residents bought distributorships in Turner's cosmetics firm. He said he struggled to obtain enough Koscot supplies and knew of at least 18 to 20 distributorships in Radford. The defense centers on overselling distributorships and inadequate supplies to salesmen. The witness described Turner's training class as motivational but said the program conflicted with his conscience. The trial also lists F Lee Bailey and seven Turner associates among those charged. The piece notes football network announcers are unmatched unless present at the game.

Kuhn Construction followed at 1,225,600 with separate detention center bids from Roanoke Iron & Bridge, Southern Steel, and Fries & Sons for detention equipment.
Raymond Tart, a Vietnam Air Force veteran, finally meets the Florida Highway Patrol height standard at 5 feet 8 1/2 inches after months of stretching. He passed on his third try and received provisional acceptance amid praise from Patrol Commander Col. Eldridge Beach.
