Violence continues as women recount abuse and tragedies
On Bluefield College lawn a Tazewell County woman details nearly four years of abuse ending when her husband shot himself. Her story echoes a Pam Hawkins murder tale shared by Barbara Hawkins at a Princeton vigil, urging unity to end senseless abuse and spare other mothers such pain.

County faces tight budget for fire department grants
Thompson Valley volunteers warn a $50,000 USDA grant could be lost without a county letter of financial support. The supervisors indicate $12,500 in funding could come from the 2001-2002 budget, not the current year, while noting overall deficits. Debts from a prior board constrain new purchases for Bluefield, Baptist Valley, and Clearfork squads.

Weather debate challenges Gore backed climate claims
Dr. Michaels argues there is no trend in stronger or more frequent hurricanes over 70 to 80 years and notes higher hurricane death rates were in earlier eras due to less infrastructure. He says El Nino has historically reduced severe winters and saved lives and money, while media coverage of hurricanes has risen faster than the events themselves.

Weather observers face closures at Mercer County Airport
Observers and pilots describe thousands of ASOS inconsistencies as the FAA proceeds to shut 152 weather observer stations in 42 states. A petition to retain observers was circulated but not signed by Smith who cites sneaky, staged closures. Some observers may remain on call as backups through November while pilots warn of fog and rapid weather shifts.
