Benefits squeeze retirees amid slumping stock market
In the US a large share of retirees faces tighter finances as stock declines erode 401(k) balances while rising medical costs press against fixed incomes. Critics note the lack of new drug coverage in Medicare and cite Congress approved Medicare premiums to cover 25 percent of elderly health costs. The Social Security COLA is 1.4 percent, the smallest since 1999, with SSI also receiving the same increase for seven million recipients.
