Bridge Day festival offers a wide range of attractions
Fayette County and West Virginia host New River Gorge Bridge Day every third weekend in October. Since 1980 it has grown into the state’s largest one day festival drawing up to 200,000 visitors. The event marks the annual legal day to walk the world’s longest single arch and to BASE jump. More than 300 athletes leap from the 876 foot arch, aiming for riverbank landings. Participants come from across the country and abroad, including Japan France Ireland and Great Britain. A 1998 record saw a 13 person simultaneous jump. The feature story follows Moore a 1976 Bluefield High School and 1981 WVU grad now a project coordinator as he and his wife pursue skydiving, enjoying the social aspect and personal challenge of the sport.
