Woman charged in theft of $2.87 from courthouse fountain
A western Ohio woman pleaded not guilty to petty theft for taking $2.87 from the Logan County Courthouse fountain in Bellefontaine. Police found change on her when questioned. She says she is jobless and stole to buy food for herself and her four cats. Officials hope to resolve the case before the November trial.

Woman indicted for first degree murder in Bluefield shooting
A Mercer County grand jury indicted Judith Helen Kowaleski 43 of Bluefield on first degree murder for the fatal shooting of Elizabeth Slagle 42 at Falls Mills and Nichols roads after heated text exchanges about an altercation involving their children on a school bus. Slagle died of a chest gunshot and a .38 revolver was found at Kowaleski’s home. The case also indicted Latasha Kanode 23 of Princeton and Steven McDonald 32 of Bluefield in the death of Sherry Matthews 44 of Princeton.

Three arrested for metal theft at McDowell industrial site
In McDowell County a father Tommy Cordle 39 and son Jonathan Cordle 20 and Heather Burdett 28 were arrested after state police and deputies responded to a report of metal removal at an industrial property in Vivian. Burdett confessed to driving up and down the road waiting for the suspects. Cordles face breaking and entering conspiracy petit larceny and obstructing counts while Burdett faces conspiracy and petit larceny. Bonds set at 10 000 for Burdett and 20 000 for each Cordle.

Man charged after threats to bomb local schools
Frankie Edward Smith, 52, of Richlands, was arrested without incident around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday on two counts of threatening to bomb or burn a public building. Richlands Police and Virginia State Police conducted the arrest. he is held at Southwest Regional Jail in Tazewell.
