Cops and Kids: Redlands Police Turn Playful Outreach
In Redlands California the police use the Risked Focus Policing program to shift from patrols to playgrounds and education. Four year old Angela Valdez watched as six police cars arrived with a SWAT bus and toys. The effort aims to reduce crime by prevention through weekly play dates, cleanups, carnivals, and classes. Since starting, the program reports a 50 percent drop in crime in the Valdezes neighborhood and a 36 percent drop citywide as trust and cooperation grow.
