Eligible Mercer county voters planning to be out of state on election day are urged to file absentee ballot applications in the circuit court clerk Landon T. Reynolds office by October 28. They may then vote at a designated location on or after that date.
A proposed glass composition may include up to 30 percent lete to raise electrical resistivity and enhance light dispersion for television tubes.
Forty seven applicants took automobile driver tests before state troopers. Fifteen failed in various categories including one physical test, two written tests, one for faulty equipment, and eleven in operation. Successful names include Mrs. Ruby Byrd, Inez Lee Goodwin, Amel Lusk, Joe I. Lively Jr., and many others across towns like Princeton, Bluefield, Hinton, Montcalm, Oakvale, Crumpler, and Athens.
Mercer Farm Women clubs plan their annual Achievement Day at Glenwood Park on Thursday October 26. Registration starts at 10 and the program begins at 10 30. Luncheon will be served. Miss Anne Boggs assistant state home demonstration agent will attend and take part in the program. She will also be here November 2 for the farm women's council planning meeting.
Mrs W E Ratliff of Caldwell Ohio and Mr and Mrs David Ratliff of Dayton Ohio returned home after a week with Mr and Mrs W R Raney on Harrison Street. Mrs Jack Burgess and infant Ronald returned to Narrows Virginia after visiting her parents Harold Caffee on the Bluefield Princeton road. Bobby and Jimmy Moxley stayed home with a catarrh infection. Mr and Mrs Frank Cook 315 Hospital. The baby weighed six pounds twelve ounces named Michael Wayne.
Mr. and Mrs. Wilbert Sowers and their two daughters Jean and Cathy, visiting Princeton and Rich Creek, depart for Greenville. They are longtime Bob Jones University faculty in Greenville with Mr. Sowers as stage designer in film production and Mrs. Sowers teaching dramatic interpretation and aiding the university radio station. The couple previously lived in Los Angeles for five years and earned their masters from USC. Mrs. Sowers is an Iowa native. They arrived in Greenville September 1.
The Bud and Blossom Garden club led by Mrs. Grover Morgan met Friday at Mrs. Buford Thomas’s home on Lowell Ave. New member W. S. Hickam Jr. joined. Members reviewed the White Sulphur Springs regional meeting notes and approved a honorary and associate member list for personal invitations to the November 10 anniversary tea at the Elks club. A nominating committee was named and corsage making instructions were given. A brief dessert was served. a short business meeting is set for November 3 in the Memorial building lounge.
Los Angeles artist Frank Carlson turned wartime boredom into a hobby of decorating envelopes. He drew cartoons for his wife, added roses and domestic scenes, then began illustrating squadrons from World War II on mail. He has completed about 100 envelopes, each with a fitting postmark, drawing hundreds of fans and requiring night work to meet demand.
More than 40 Mercer County 4 H club leaders attended a dinner meeting at First Methodist Church. President Mrs B C Hodges and officers including Secretary Mrs Nancy Smith were reelected. Florence Howard outlined 1951 club planning and Barbara McKenzie discussed project judging using sewing as an example. Mary Etta Hight demonstrated cutting a woolen skirt. Margaret Phalen led singing. Luncheon served by Helen Farrier circle.
The Mercer county Methodist young adult group holds a quarterly planning meeting at the First Methodist church in Princeton on Monday night at 8. Presidents and council members are urged to attend.
The Florabunda Garden club will meet Monday night at eight o'clock with Mrs. Carson Hicks on Bee street. Mrs. William Epling Jr. is co host. Members unable to attend will notify Mrs. Epling. Mrs. Charles McGuire will give a program on arrangement of dried flowers.
Small white Toy Collie with brown spots on head and tail, answers to Peggy, disappeared October 10. Reward offered for safe return. Owner is ill in hospital. Notify Mrs Hazel Karnes Kegley West Virginia or Paulinia Karnes c o Maiden Form.

Poignant remembrance for Rhoda J Thomas who passed away Oct 12 1946 four years ago today. The note praises her as a devoted mother loyal helper and upright friend missed by daughters Gladys Jennie Lois Doris and sons Eugene Lee Robert and Booker and sister Mary.
