Deer trampled an electric fence at Camp Creek Road farm sparking a fire that destroyed more than 100 round bales of hay. Firefighters faced a hot, uncooled blaze as dry conditions and repeated fence breaches kept feeding the flames. Local officials noted this was the second such fire in seven days linked to an electric fence.
Misty Horn, 16, a Richlands High School junior, won the Miss Virginia Teen USA 1998 title at Southwest Virginia Community College. She will spend the year promoting the platform of domestic violence awareness while preparing for the Miss Teen USA pageant. Horn is a cheerleader, tennis team member, flute player, and Crisis Center volunteer. she plans speaking engagements across Virginia and may give up the marching band flute.
The line from John Denver's Take Me Home Country Roads became an unofficial West Virginia anthem for residents. Lena Rideout, 69, recalls hearing it while traveling with her Air Force husband Robert. Denver died in a 53 year old plane crash near Pacific Grove, California, prompting West Virginia stations to lead broadcasts with the news.
Richlands businessman Harry McGlothin and his wife have opened Fireside Lanes Bowling Alley on a long‑vacant site, transforming land into a community hub. The 12‑lane facility, featuring a pro shop and restaurant, drew broad support and hosts six leagues including a youth group, with laser bowling and a light show planned.

Biologists with the South Florida Water Management District purchased 108 plastic flamingos on a yard-art binge to test if white painted yard birds can attract snowy egrets, white ibises, and wood storks to marshes. The cheaper flamingos aim to lure real birds more than realistic egret decoys.
