In Buchanan County the school system rehired 30 of 51 laid off employees including 10 teachers after a 2.1 million budget gap. Superintendent Larry Ashby sought 176,000 to hire more staff but was denied by the Board of Supervisors. Classes were combined at both elementary and high school levels as layoffs continued to affect staffing. If funds become available, further rehiring is planned.
West Virginia Secretary of State officials are working with the United Way of the Virginias to determine steps to regain nonprofit status after it was revoked on December 1, 2008 for failing to file annual reports and renew charity registration. If annual donations exceed 25,000 dollars, late fees accrue at 25 dollars per month through December 2008 onward.
