Mercer County Faces 12 Percent Cut in Revenue Sharing Funds

Mercer County Coordinator-Planner Fred Parker warned Lions Club members that a Reagan era federal budget drop will shrink revenue sharing by about 12 percent immediately, with further cuts likely to erase the funds used for rural fire departments ambulance authorities and other essential services. He noted a related jail fire marshal ruling spurring architectural study by Kimball & Associates to decide whether to renovate or replace the county jail, with cost constraints looming. Parker highlighted 34 bond applications averaging near 1 million dollars each, seeking industrial and commercial projects including restaurants and offices, and urged diversification beyond coal while praising Smith Industries as a catalyst for broader growth. He closed with local club business and a Madagascar island note.
