Coal slurry spill shuts Massey plant after 100000 gallon leak

A ruptured Massey Energy Bandmill Coal Co pipe released about 100000 gallons of coal slurry into Rum Creek and the Guyandotte River in Logan County. DEP ordered the plant closed until cleanup. downstream water plants monitor impact while Massey and regulators investigate the rupture and crack.

Virginia students improve SOL scores

Virginia schools report higher pass rates on 23 of 28 SOL tests last spring, with gains concentrated in fifth and eighth grade History and Social Sciences and high school World History II and U.S. History. Four tests declined slightly and one fifth grade Writing unchanged as passing scores were lowered last year.
