Market Rallies For Strong Finish
New York AP reports the stock market erased an early decline and rose after Chase Manhattan Bank cut its prime lending rate to 18.5 percent. The Dow gained 9.42 to 878.14 as volume eased to 47.09 million on NYSE and 369 advances led 182 declines on the Nasdaq. Strong September sales lifted Roebuck, Kmart, and J C Penney, signaling improving retail demand amid falling short term rates.
