Washington reports that mobilization director Charles E. Wilson abandoned studies on removing aluminum production lines from the Pacific Northwest. Improved northwest power due to heavy rainfall made such a shift uneconomical for now. The move follows earlier requests to aluminum producers to assess cost and feasibility of relocating parts of the industry.
Greenfield Massachusetts October 5 a frantic mother reported three year old Andrea Roy missing from home police found the child trying to peddle six bottles of beer to a Main street store for 20 cents a clerk offered 12 cents Andrea too shrewd a trader for that placed the bottles back in her doll carriage and headed home.
Washington reports Secretary Acheson barred any linkage between a Korea armistice and three major diplomatic questions. They are recognition of Red China, admission of Peiping into the United Nations, and turning Formosa over to Communist China. Acheson laid out policy in a letter to Senator H Alexander Smith as Jessup testified before a Senate subcommittee.
Washington Oct 5 largest peacetime military appropriation bill passed by the House to provide 94.0 billion dollars for preparedness this year. The bill authorizes a defense budget of 56.94 billion, with about 37.0 billion carried over from prior years. House approved by voice vote and sent the measure to the Senate.
Bland Virginia October 5 Ralph A Newberry 38 tonight was found guilty of second degree murder and his punishment set at 20 years in prison by a Bland county jury hearing his retrial The sentence was the stiffest allowed by the Virginia supreme court of appeals when it reversed a previous murder conviction against Ralph Newberry The husky Newberry a Bland county farmer who paled slightly when the jury read the verdict was charged with murder January 11 1949 after the headless body of his wife Mary Katheryn Newberry 37 was found wrapped in a sheet and stuffed into a wool bag on Big Walker mountain His defense was that she was shot by his brother Samuel L Newberry 32 who currently is appealing to the Virginia supreme court from a first degree murder conviction and a life sentence The state contended that Ralph participated in the slashing off of his wife's head while she was still alive and the burning of the head in a living room stove
The Defense Department asked Congress for a flat 10 percent pay increase for all armed forces including officers enlisted cadets and coast guard personnel. The rise reflects higher living costs since the last raise two years ago and would backdate to July 1. Estimated annual cost is about 800 million dollars with a cap of 800 dollars per person.
London reports Soviet Prime Minister Stalin confirmed a recent atomic test and warned more would follow under a defense plan. He said Russia aims to prohibit atomic bombs but US attacks may trigger further development and tests across various calibers.
A 3325 ton freighter carrying at least 23 crewmen cracked in two and sank in the Atlantic as a hurricane lashed off Cape Hatteras. Only seven survivors were recovered. one died soon after. Coast Guard, Navy and Air Force planes, plus merchant ships, searched a 60 mile area for the missing seamen. The Southern Isles, a converted LST, vanished with its master Capt. George P. Bonuse totals run about 130 million dollars, with West Virginia issuing 90 million for world wars I and II veterans and Oregon for World War II veterans. Oregon and West Virginia voters approved bonds last year, while Oregon eyed two issues this month.

A pooled dispatch says Allied forces moved toward a vital hill mass after inflicting 1205 Red casualties in two days and forcing Chinese to pull out last night. The hill mass strengthens control of the Seoul-Chorwon-Kumhwa rail line, a key supply artery. Soule told correspondents the division hit the main Communist line.
Bluefield hero and World War Two medal of honor winner Junior J Spurrier is at the center of confusion over his whereabouts with army officials at Fort Lawton unsure if he is in Korea or Japan. Spurrier, 28, in custody for theft and hit and run, told Justice of the Peace he has been AWOL since last April and wants a discharge. He claimed he didn’t know he was on a Korean shipment and said he wants the case settled quickly.
Army will release by December 20 from active duty all World War II enlisted men in the reserve who were involuntarily called up. Air Force and Navy plans vary with officers and pilots kept longer to 17 months. Marine Corps to return all active duty reserves by June 1952, with enlisted Marines averaging about 14 months.
