West Virginia hospitals face budget cuts and rising costs
Cornwell notes expanding services while expenses rise and revenues do not. Pawlowski reports two months into the new fiscal year show daily census rising from 118 to 140, aiding fixed costs. He cites the Balanced Budget Act as harming U S hospitals, especially in West Virginia, where older populations and Medicare cases are higher. two WV hospitals closed or near closure, nursing homes lose over 2 million, about 27 in bankruptcy, and local hospitals incur a record net loss of 7.7 million for year to June 30, 2000. He thanks staff for efforts amid cutbacks.
