Alternate Bridge Day routes add 60 miles for travelers
AYETTEVILLE AP Vehicles barred from crossing the New River Gorge Bridge for Bridge Day will force drivers to add about 60 miles via alternate routes. State DOT spokesman Bill Bissett said the one day yearly event justifies the closure of a four lane highway and Bridge Day will proceed. The bridge spans 876 feet, is the world s longest and second tallest single arch, and Bridge Day typically attracts over 175 000 visitors. In prior years northbound Route 19 lanes were closed to allow pedestrians to cross and for parachutists and rappelers to leap from the structure.
