Friday release from Jet Propulsion Laboratory describes Galileo approaching Venus on February 10 1990. The near infrared map portrays a turbulent cloud deck 30 to 33 miles above the surface with radiant heat in bright regions and sulfuric acid clouds in darker areas.

Bluefield December Civic Events Planned Across City

On Monday December 3 at noon a Bluefield Main Street luncheon at the Bluefield Area Arts and Crafts Center offers a $5 buffet with reservations by calling 325 5442. Also Monday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. an Open House at Mercer County Fellowship Home invites the public to view the new women’s recovery program and renovations at 421 Scott Street. Tuesday December 4 at 7:45 a.m. features Business Before Hours, hosted by the Greater Bluefield and Princeton Mercer Chambers, at the Mercer County Technical Education Seminar Center in Princeton. Wednesday December 12 at 4 p.m. the Bluefield State College Center for International Understanding Advisory Committee meeting is rescheduled to Conley Hall 309 from Dec 5.

BLUEFIELD The Community Christmas Tree program received a $355 boost on Thursday with 12 new contributions. While the total now exceeds $650, the drive still needs more than $11,000 to reach its goal.

Bus stop wreck kills boy near Bluewell

Two seven year old second graders from Bluewell Elementary were hit by a car after getting off a school bus on Route 20. Kenneth Clyburn died at Princeton Community Hospital. Justin Surface was hospitalized in critical but stable condition after transfer to UVA Hospital Charlottesville for a head injury. The driver Charles Owens, facing negligent homicide charges, said sun glare blocked his view.

U N approves force if Iraq does not quit Kuwait

The U N Security Council voted 12 to 2 to authorize force to free Kuwait if Iraq does not withdraw its troops and release all hostages by January 15. China abstained, Cuba and Yemen dissented, as the session urged Saddam Hussein to leave. Bush called the vote a strong message, with Baker saying force could be used if peaceful steps fail.
