Columbia launches nine day Spacelab space voyage
SPACE CENTER Houston AP Six astronauts blasted into orbit aboard Columbia for a nine day mission to study space Earth and human biology. The crew includes West German Ulf Merbold the first non American on a U S launch. Mission commander John Young and pilot Brewster Shaw led the crew as they activated the Spacelab equipment and began lymphocyte experiments to assess the immune system in weightlessness. The hatch had initial trouble opening but was freed after several minutes.

West Virginia public schools will link 21 counties via an electronic library starting next year.
