Berlin said Liverpool was burning from a major German air raid as hundreds of bombers attacked early today. Fires raged along the Mersey with tanks and warehouses hit, oil tanks bursting and flooding the river as pilots reported extensive destruction across Britain’s second largest port.
German bombers hit northwestern Liverpool with incendiaries and high explosives as waves pound the city for hours. The British press says anti aircraft fire kept many attackers away and damage centered on houses. A few deaths are reported near a public shelter. London dispatch notes a siege context.
At Norfolk and Western headquarters L C Ayers of Roanoke Va is promoted to assistant general manager. O M Dawson of Portsmouth Ohio becomes Scioto division superintendent succeeding Ayers. H C Wyatt moves to Scioto superintendent and J W Kirk shifts to Shenandoah superintendent with others promoted within the Pocahontas and Shenandoah divisions.
New York report says Jesse L Livermore aged 62, once dubbed the boy wonder of Wall Street who turned a $10 stake into vast fortunes, was found shot to death in the Sherry Netherlands hotel cloak room. Police say suicide by .32 revolver behind the right ear. He had recent failed fortunes and a 1939 comeback attempt.
The Italian high command describes a Mediterranean clash in which heavy British forces attacked south of Sardinia. Italians claim one 1,620-ton destroyer Lanciere was seriously damaged and cruiser Fiume hit, while two British destroyers were damaged and Berwick suffered hits. The British claim limited losses.
New Orleans Nov 28 The AFL unanimously re elected President William Green for a 17th term pledging peace in the labor movement. George Meany and fourteen of fifteen vice presidents were also re elected The convention picked Seattle for next year after a lengthy debate that postponed adjournment and urged John L Lewis to halt threats to workers.
John Cudahy of Milwaukee resigns orally to President Roosevelt as ambassador to Belgium. He plans to write a novel about Poland and notes his earlier service from 1933 to 1937 and brief return in 1940 after the German occupation.
Bluefield merchants expect a strong Christmas season aided by a parade tonight featuring five bands and two Beaver A Cappella groups. Santa Claus will ride in a special truck late in the procession, greeting crowds as local Lions Club hosts with Joe Wilds as chairman. Elaborate holiday decorations line Princeton Avenue, Federal Street, and Raleigh Street despite high winds.
The Wing On, a yacht that sailed from the United States last August, wrecked on a coral reef near Vanua Levu. Victims named include Arthur Conly of Los Angeles and Eva R. Conly, with survivor Fern Thompson found in a grave condition and Thompson’s death at sea on November 7. The improvised log notes deaths through November 23 after a cyclone strike.
Washington reports tentative government and Red Cross plans to ship canned milk medicines and relief supplies to unoccupied Europe for children. The effort, questioned by British blockade risks, targets aid to unoccupied France and Spain with no broad German-occupied-area relief. timing and passage through the blockade remain uncertain.
State chamber of commerce reports a net decline of three million tons in bituminous coal production for September and October 1940 compared with 1939. Trade and industrial activity remain above 1938-39 and roughly equal to 1937 levels. Defense orders have not yet affected state business, with construction expected to lag.
Athens reports heavy fighting on the western Balkan front as Greek forces claim victory over a Fascist death regiment after four days of battle. Italians counterattack in places, but Greek sources say guns and stores were abandoned and troops retreated in disorder as Greeks advance toward Argirocastro and coastal Albania.
In Mexico City, about 500 demonstrators围rushed the U S embassy as Vice President elect Henry Wallace arrived for General Avila Camacho’s inauguration. Police used tear gas to disperse the crowd, which shouted anti Wallace and pro Almaza won slogans. No arrests or serious injuries reported.
Bitolj reports heavy Greek counter-attacks in Pogradetz sector near the Yugoslav frontier. Italian planes raided Philorina, starting large fires as civilians fled. The fate of Pogradetz remains uncertain with conflicting reports while Greek shelling continues.
Ice coated highways persisted across eastern districts last night with at least two traffic deaths blamed on the slick conditions. A pedestrian died near Wheeling after a skidding car struck them as winter eased and temperatures were forecast to rise.
In Washington on November 28 two bills were introduced to prohibit strikes at plants producing defense materials. Attorney General Jackson told the House Judiciary Committee he had no advice on new labor legislation, noting the Vultee Aircraft strike has not been resolved and may require further action. Regular mediation and arbitration would be mandated with restrictions on strikes or lockouts.
In Bucharest military control tightens as German troops enter the capital after Iron Guard rebels clash with Antonescu regime. Reports say Iron Guardsmen seized police HQ and near telephones, while leaders confer with the dictator amid a wave of assassinations including Nicolai Iorga and other regime figures.
The Japanese sponsored Nanking regime appeals to Chiang Kai-Shek to end hostilities and cooperate with Japan. An open telegram from Ching-Wei to Chiang Kai-Shek in Chungking requests peace actions as Tokyo moves toward formal recognition and East Asia dominance amid ongoing civil conflict.
