The Shiloh Baptist Church in Alderson suffered about ten thousand dollars in damage from the November flood. Four feet of water ruined piano, Bibles, hymnals, and church furnishings while residents like Ethyl Williams faced widespread losses to homes on the ground floor. Worship has been suspended as cleanup continues.
The Virginia Supreme Court sided with the Richlands Medical Association approving a new 76 bed hospital at Claypool Hill to replace the Mattie Williams Hospital. Dr. Emile Khuri, Dr. E E Moore and Dr. J McVey led the five year campaign for the project, arguing it would deliver better care to Richlands and surrounding counties.
Two days of heavy rain forced about 700 evacuations in Ohio and Marshall counties as streams overflowed in West Virginia. The National Weather Service warned of continued flooding with 1.25 inches more rain expected and a flood watch covering 35 of 55 counties from the Ohio River east to the mountains. The Big Grave Creek overflow in Moundsville damaged 36 mobile homes and other property. The Ohio River was forecast to crest above flood stage near Wellsburg at 5 a.m. Thursday.
Mercer County prosecutor David Knight says an inmate Chris Umberger and Donna Crigger planned to meet at a mall using a rented U Haul to escape. Knight notes a second U Haul unexpectedly appeared in the lot, thwarting the plan.
Elizabeth Fried reports on the Bluefields dispute over sewer tap allotments under a 1984 moratorium. Bluefield W Va holds 35 taps to Bluefield Va 15, drawing criticism from Art Mead and Cecile Richardson who say allocations hinder economic growth. Mead notes Va taps exhausted through Nov 15 1986 while Fred Burton chairs the board and defends the method.
On day three of the Bluefield Community Christmas Tree Fund donations total about 160 dollars, aiding gifts for over 1,000 area children. The 1985 goal is 12,000, with more contributions sought to ensure a happy Christmas. Donations can be mailed to Bluefield Daily Telegraph Box 1599 or dropped at 412 Bland Street. Memorial gifts noted for J L Kersey Jr and Aimee Kristen Howard.
The Commerce Department reports October imports fell 13.4 percent to 28 82 billion while exports slipped 2.1 percent to 17 37 billion creating an October deficit of 11 5 billion down from September's 15 55 billion. Analysts note the drop in auto imports amid a car supply lull signals potential bottoming of the trade downturn.ーレ
A weather outlook projects more rain today with possible heavy bursts. Highs reach the 60s and tonight sees lingering showers with lows in the 50s. Friday remains cloudy with a 50 percent shower chance and similar highs. Saturday and Sunday bring a continued chance of rain with upper 50s highs and upper 40s to near 50s lows.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 18.92 points to 1,475.69 in active trading, extending the late 1985 rally and surpassing the previous close of 1,464.33 reached last Thursday as stocks moved higher.
