Cemetery fence removal honors Bluefield’s forgotten African Americans
In Maple Hill Cemetery Bluefield West Virginia a fence was removed and overgrowth cleared revealing about 300 graves of African Americans including enslaved individuals. Dignitaries and residents gathered Friday for a dedication noting handmade concrete monuments and births dating to the 1830s. Art Meade said this is recovery not restoration. A highway marker was approved to commemorate the site.
