Memories of disaster for the Daily Telegraph
A 1937 daily feature recalls a Norfolk & Western time freight run from Bluefield to Williamson. The Y-5 Mallet locomotive No. 2092 pulled 89 cars, including a Texaco tank car and a liquor boxcar, with Engineer W W Snead and crew aboard. Fireman N Ezra McHattin, 43, tended the boiler as the train moved through West Virginia and Virginia counties, amid a family legacy in railroading and a WPA stint during a downturn.
