Bluefield tied a 70 degree landmark with records from 1897 and 1946 as Tri State Huntington 74 Beckley 69 and Elkins 71 and Charleston 76 also matched records. Meanwhile nationwide Thanksgiving weekend traffic deaths topped 386 with California leading at 67 followed by Florida 39 and Pennsylvania 18 and Ohio Michigan Missouri each 16.

Hechler praises Supreme Court ruling on campaign limits

West Virginia Secretary of State Ken Hechler hailed a Supreme Court decision allowing states to limit candidate contributions from political committees. He plans to draft a WV law for January’s Legislature, arguing the ruling promotes free speech for principled candidates and levels the playing field by curbing big money.

Bond Set At 20000 In Bluefield Stabbing Case

Karl Finney 51 of Bluefield is charged with stabbing death of Christopher Dillard 32 found near Reservoir Street on Tank Hill November 13. Finney arrested in Tazewell Virginia November 20 and brought back November 21. He is half brother of Calvin Gray 35 the chief suspect in the deaths of Dillard and Artissa Bennett 20. Gray remains sought by police.

PSC pushes plan for consolidation

Princeton report on a plan to consolidate public service districts in Mercer County was submitted by the West Virginia Public Service Commission. Director Amy L. Swann said the PSC aims for cooperation, not confrontation, and the formal case will be heard by an administrative law judge next year with decisions based on presented evidence.

Caperton denies mood swings amid gas-fuel plan spat

Gov. Gaston Caperton rejected claims of mood swings while discussing whether state cars should transition from gasoline to natural gas. Former press secretary G C Morse called the governor’s remarks overly harsh after a Nov. 14 incident in John Rawson’s office. Morse, fired by Caperton, said his criticism was too strong and not his to make. Caperton later defended his temper and noted Morse’s evaluation as unfounded. Caperton spoke after touring the Capitol in a Wise-owned car fueled by natural gas.

Bluefield reports the 74th annual Community Christmas Tree campaign opened with only $2 collected on Monday.
