Mercer County Jail inmate Christopher Lee Umberger obtained a .22 pistol via a store order and hid it in a box of Grape Nuts Flakes for six days. Investigators say a Bluefield woman, Donna Crigger, aided by smuggling the gun. Umberger’s plan involved taking Deputy Sheriff Ernie Taylor hostage and fleeing toward Mercer Mall.
The forecast calls for a 40 percent chance of showers today with highs in the low to mid 70s. Tonight could bring another 30 percent shower chance with lows in the 50s. Thanksgiving remains warm and breezy with variable clouds and scattered showers, highs in the 70s and a 40 percent rain chance.

Deputy Ernie Taylor says inmates tried to grab his cruiser on Courthouse Road after a Bluefield court appearance. Chris Umberger forced him to pull into Tomorrow's Lounge and fired a shot, piercing Taylor’s back. inmate William Bragg escaped after being ordered to handcuff him. The pursuit ended in Mercer Mall parking lot as Umberger drove away with the wounded officer.
175 leading cartoonists plan a Comic Relief project on Thanksgiving Day to raise awareness and funds for world hunger. Garry Trudeau conceived the effort with co sponsors Charles Schulz and Milton Caniff, stressing comics as a public utility to reach 90 million readers and encourage aid.
On day two of the 68th Bluefield Community Christmas Tree Fund more than 1,000 area youngsters stand to benefit as donations totaled $30. The 1985 goal is $12,000 and gifts will be chosen by children who will also receive candy fruit and stocking stuffers. Contributions can be mailed to The Bluefield Daily Telegraph or dropped at 412 Bland Street in memory of Pamela Young.
Mercer County School Superintendent William H. Baker angrily rejects claims he sought a secret meeting on Bible classes. He says the Charleston Gazette editorial misrepresented his stance and insists he would not violate open meetings laws. Baker notes he and Assistant Superintendent Sue Schmelzer met with backers to answer questions.
