James Catron 83 of Bluefield died Thursday in a Johnson City Tennessee Veterans Hospital. He was born in Tazewell County Virginia son of William W. and Margaret Jane Cole Catron a World War I veteran and retired carpenter. He served 20 years as superintendent of the Westminster Chapel Sunday School and was a member of Old Guard. Survived by two daughters Florence Lineberger Austin Texas and Ida Mae Catron Oak Hill one brother Frazier Catron Elkins and several grandchildren. Funeral Sunday 2 30 p m at Mercer Funeral Chapel with Dr C H Patterson officiating burial Grandview Memory Gardens Bluefield with military rites by Riley West Post No 9 American Legion and VFW Post No 9696 pallbearers from the posts. Visitation 7 to 9 p m today. Leona Gardner 50 of Welch died Friday in a Welch hospital after a long illness. Funeral arrangements incomplete at Fanning Funeral Home Welch.
Bland VA hunters may legally kill does today only as Game Warden Wayne Richardson patrols with a spotlight. He notes reports of about 20 does slaughtered in Kimberling section, though most hunters feel the figure was inflated. A few additional doe carcasses have been found, suggesting more illegal killings, likely for extra meat during hard economic times. Richardson says many shots miss bucks and are abandoned to avoid wardens, with plainclothes wardens active nearby.
Glen Rife 65 of Hurley Va dies from injuries after his vehicle rear ended a tractor trailer near Grundy Monday night. Investigated by Virginia State Police Trooper W J Evans. A published correction notes two Mercer County residents attended the West Virginia State Reading Council annual conference at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs. John Griffith and Janet Eggleston were omitted from the attendee list.

A two car collision occurred around 4 p.m. Friday when a northbound 1968 Dodge driven by 86 year old Peter R. Bates failed to stop on a steep Cherry Street grade. Bates struck a 1979 Toyota driven by Deborah J. Heslop at Highland Avenue. No injuries or citations were reported. Damage valued at 400 to Bates car. Heslop's car totaled. Officer P.
