In MANNINGTON West Virginia an explosion at Mountain Mine No 9 follows a major first blast that trapped 78 miners for seven days. Seventy eight men remain entombed as officials debate sealing the mine while a fire rages and rescue attempts continue.
Mary Matish speaks of her husband Frank and 77 other miners trapped 600 feet underground after a Mountaineer Coal Co. No. 9 explosion. She recalls 31 years of marriage, their son Jimmy, and her hope for his schooling and future away from mining.
Rome AP Mariano Rumor leader of Italy's largest party was named to form a new center left government under President Saragat. He will be sworn in only after he proves a cabinet can be formed. If successful this could create Italy's fourth center left coalition with Socialists and Republican Party. The Socialist party seeks major labor social and educational reforms.
Flair Discount Inc. says it will sue the Retail Merchants Association and the Bluefield Chamber of Commerce for conspiring to close Flair stores on Sundays. The suit seeks damages in excess of $100,000 and defamation claims against anyone who takes action against Flair employees. The filing references the West Virginia Sunday closing law and names multiple merchants as alleged violators.
A fifth young man was jailed in Princeton in connection with the Bluefield State College Physical Education Building bombing. Five suspects face preliminary hearings on conspiracy and possession of explosives with criminal intent. Bonds total $175,000.
Washington said Saigon will send a delegation to Paris and include the National Liberation Front. The United States guaranteed South Vietnam will lead on matters of principal concern and oversee talks on troop withdrawal. Officials warned no veto over U.S. actions, and a democratic government for South Vietnam would be recognized.
President elect Richard Nixon promotes Robert F. Ellsworth to a broad general charter White House post. Ellsworth, 42, will fly to London to study the Institute for Strategic Studies and compare it with American think tanks. He then returns to New York for a lunch with Henry Ford II about the National Alliance for Business.
U S officials fear NATO access secrets may have let the Soviet Union pinpoint European warhead storage sites. Investigations focus on West Germany and Turkish interrogations to gauge any damage to NATO defense plans.
Allied forces joined Marine and South Vietnamese units just inside the southern DMZ in two firefights sparked by intensified enemy artillery. Reinforcements aided a 3rd Marine Division patrol near Con Thien as jets and artillery silenced northern fire. reports said at least three NVA were killed and one prisoner taken north of Gio Linh.
France's government announces a belt tightening to balance the economy and protect the franc after a currency crisis. Premier Maurice Couve de Murville says the 1969 budget deficit will be cut from 2.34 billion to 1.27 billion dollars with tax shifts and production increases. Military spending, Concorde subsidies, and subsidies to coal, rails, gas, and power are trimmed. Rail freight rates rise 6.2 percent and gas and high tension power rates rise 4.8 percent December 1 to offset cuts.
West Virginia Gov. Hulett C. Smith announced there were no bids by 1 p.m. for a $20 million road bond issue. He blamed the 4% interest cap and 25 year maturities, noting market rates at about 4.63% for AA munis. Smith may reoffer the issue or invest state funds in it, or seek a higher interest ceiling from the legislature.
