Christmas parachutist crashes onto moving car in Quincy

In Quincy Massachusetts during a Christmas festival more than 1,000 spectators watched as parachutist Robert G. Humphrey of Holbrook veered from Faxon Field in a wind squall and landed on a moving car. He suffered a broken knee and leg with bruises and is said to be resting comfortably at Quincy Hospital. Parachutists dressed as Santa and elves landed safely.

Monkeys Dine at Invitation-Only Feast in Lopburi

About 500 monkeys attended a lavish banquet in Lopburi Thailand hosted by Yongyudh Kitwattananusom owner of a local hotel. Invitations were sent to residents of an ancient temple area with 50 tables laid with cloths and a menu including salad cashews rice and tropical fruits. The event aimed to promote the Lopburi Inn and the city once part of the Cambodian empire. Lopburi sits 90 miles north of Bangkok.

Virginia Tech fans tore down a goal post after the Hokies defeated Virginia 38 to 13 in Blacksburg. Virginia, once No. 1, ends the regular season 8 3 and earns Sugar Bowl bid. Hokies finish 6 5 after beating three bowl teams and losing to Georgia Tech on a last minute field goal. Crowd of 54 157 at Lane Stadium marked the largest football crowd in Virginia.

Virginia Medicaid expansion adds at least 17000 people

Virginia officials warn federal budget provisions will add at least 17 000 poor Virginians to Medicaid over the next two years. The expansions, funded jointly by federal and state governments, will cost about 25 million dollars in Virginia’s two year budget. Congress requires coverage for children up to age 19 in poverty.

Fire Departments Prepare for Possible Major Earthquake

In Tazewell County Virginia volunteers from several fire departments and a rescue squad met at the courthouse to plan how to handle a predicted major quake along the New Madrid Fault around December 3. Fire Chief Ben Barringer warned emergency services would bear the brunt if a large quake strikes, given the departments’ wide spread. Local participants included Clearfork Cove Bishop and the Tazewell Lifesaving Crew plus a consultant from Albuquerque.

Community Christmas Tree campaign opens with $25 donation

The 74th annual Community Christmas Tree kickoff reports a $25 gift from William Craft toward a $12,000 goal. The raise funds to provide hundreds of toy and fruit filled bags to area children ahead of the December 24 event at Bluefield City Auditorium. Blind hiker Bill Irwin hailed as folk hero after 2100 mile Appalachian Trail trek

After finishing the 2100 mile hike through the Appalachian Trail, Bill Irwin plans interviews and appearances while life in Burlington may change. His sister Midge calls him a folk hero for handicapped people and suggests a film could follow. Irwin has begun speaking engagements and a manuscript project with Bill McCandless aiming for a March deadline.
