U S special envoy Kissinger and North Vietnam’s Tho paused secret peace talks in Paris for nine days to seek new instructions. Kissinger left for New York to brief President Nixon while Tho remained in Paris. Both sides gave no details and warned against speculation as talks resume December 4.
U S B 52 bombers pressed the heaviest raids over North Vietnam amid a pause in Paris talks until December 4. A second B52 was damaged by a surface to air missile with six crew aboard the downed plane. two crew were hurt on the damaged plane. An Air America Caribou was shot down, killing two Americans, a Thai and a Lao. North Vietnam condemned the raids as deceitful, while South Vietnamese marchers protested along Highway 4 demanding North Vietnamese forces leave.
Sean MacStiofain, seen as IRA guerrilla commander, received a six month prison term for belonging to the outlawed movement. He collapsed during sentencing after a weeklong hunger strike and warned of death before submission. His wife cried as police guarded him, and crowds gathered outside the hospital amid fears of protests.
German police shot dead Viktor Widera after he took Air Canada stewardess Margit Sommer hostage aboard a Frankfurt DC8. The 58 year old man demanded prisoner releases and claimed dynamite. Sommer, exhausted but unharmed, escaped as police stormed the plane.
