Five former Cuban army officers were massacred on a highway near Colon as a military escort moved them from Matanzas to Santa Clara. The victims included Col Abelardo Herrera Estrada and Capt Sacramento Castillo, with other lieutenants also killed. Unidentified gunmen halted the convoy and shot the officers in a nearby field.
