News wires report President Kennedy shot in Dallas as world leaders and crowds react with shock. Lyndon B. Johnson becomes president. Oswald is arrested for murder in a tense post assassination scene. Witnesses describe three gunshots and the brutal aftermath.
A 34 year old Wythe County man Emmett Franklin Blevins of Cripple Creek died instantly in a one car wreck on State Route 619 near Speedwell. The vehicle left the road and struck a tree after failing to negotiate a curve. Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
Gov. John B. Connally underwent surgery after being wounded in the Kennedy assassination attempt. Dr. Robert R. Shaw said the injury was a single chest bullet with rib fragments and a lung tear. The governor should recover fully and stay 10 to 14 days in the hospital. He has not been told of the president's death.
Edith Honbr of Gretna died in a two car crash at the U S 29 and Virginia 718 intersection just south of Chatham in Pittsylvania County. The wreck raised Virginia traffic deaths to 866 for the year, 16 above the prior year’s figure at this time.
Governor W W Barron and state officials react to President Kennedy's death after lunch at the executive mansion. Barron cancels appointments as offices close. Rev C Anderson Davis of Bluefield comments on Kennedy's legacy. Davis chairs the Emancipation Proclamation Committee and notes Kennedy’s death as a great loss.
Kennedy’s body returned Friday evening to Washington after the JFK assassination. Air Force One landed at Andrews AFB at 6 03 p m with pallbearers on board. The casket was moved to Bethesda Naval Hospital as Mrs Kennedy rode in the accompanying ambulance. President Johnson delivered a somber first address and then headed to the White House with Mrs Johnson. Kennedy lies in state at the White House Saturday and Capitol arrangements remain tentative.
Johnson walks into the White House after the Dallas assassination of President Kennedy. He arrives at 6 23 p m with his wife on the helicopter from Andrews Air Force Base Maryland and meets Defense Secretary McNamara and national security adviser McGeorge Bundy.

Police identified Oswald, linked to the scene, after a pursuit and brief scuffle in a theater. He worked at the book depository and had ties to the Soviet Union.
A nationwide outpouring of grief follows President Kennedy’s assassination. Leaders from both parties express sorrow, lower flags to half staff, and suspend business as they extend sympathy to Mrs. Kennedy and the children. Governors Wallace and Love call for unity and prayer.
