Highway Accidents Take Toll In Bluefield Section
Three deadly crashes in the Bluefield area killed four people and injured five others. Alonzo Brewster, 30, of Welch, died after his car sidewiped a truck and plunged over an embankment on Premier mountain. Mrs. Clarebelle Morrison, 40, and Mrs. Minnie Gibson, 27, both of Welch, were also killed. Delphia Mabry, 21, of Roderfield survived with minor injuries. Walter W. Blackburn, 50, of Samsburg, Va., died later at the Bluefield sanitarium from a skull fracture after his truck skidded on Bluestone, dropping over a roadside edge. Also hospitalized were Norah Hawks, 25, and her two-year-old son Donald Wallace, and Miss May Hawks of Gary. The baby escaped serious harm. the sister-in-law suffered back injuries and head lacerations. Witnesses said the truck skidded as the driver attempted a turn, causing the rear wheel to drop over the road. (Turn to Page Two).
