Union Rejects Contract Threatens Steel Strike

Pittsburgh AP United Steelworkers rejected a renegotiated contract cutting wages and benefits about 10 percent to aid the slumping steel industry. The vote 231 to 141 by local presidents could lead to a nationwide strike when the current pact expires in August 1983. The proposal would have reduced hourly costs by 1.50 in wages and 0.75 in benefits in year one, with later increases, and would have excluded about 9,000 non steelmaking workers from coverage. The union plans talks next summer.
