Farmington mine disaster recalled on 10th anniversary
In Farmington West Virginia on November 20 1968 a Llewellyn portal explosion at Consolidation Coal No 9 mine killed 78 workers. The blast hurled the shaft elevator car tore apart the lamp house and ignited cars as flames shot 150 feet high. 21 men went underground escaped, 13 walked out, eight were rescued by crane bucket over nine days of further explosions and fires. Union company state and federal officials labored to extinguish the inferno amid continuing blasts.
