Lunar Orbiter 2 transmitted its initial lunar pictures from Pasadena showing cratered flat terrain potentially suitable for landings. The high resolution image covered 2.7 by 2.7 miles at 4 degrees 15 minutes north and 30 degrees 10 minutes east, captured at 3:30 p.m. and received at Ro bledo at 5:30 p.m.
Virginia asks Supreme Court to uphold anti miscegenation statute challenging interracial marriage ban. Atty Gen Robert Button argues such laws preexist and do not violate equal protection. Lovings Richard and Mildred Jeter, married in D C in 1958, challenged Virginia law leading to the case now before the court.
A 33 year old Bluefield woman Joella Waddell was killed when she stepped into traffic on Princeton Avenue at the East End Bridge after 9 p.m. Friday. The driver Hannah Lou Hardway 40 wife of Wendell G Hardway Bluefield State College president remained at the scene. Waddell died on arrival at Bluefield Sanitarium from head and body injuries. Police say the victim ran into the path of the car as she attempted to follow a friend across the street. The vehicle was traveling about 45 mph. No charges were filed.
An AP report says a Friday blaze at Bro ward Marine Inc in Fort Lauderdale razed 17 yachts and a large shed, with losses estimated at 1.5 to 2 million dollars. A dockside fire and power line smoking were noted, as crews battled the wind driven flames with fuel explosions endangering over 50 firefighters. No serious injuries reported.
U S Roman Catholic bishops abolished the church’s mandatory rule against eating meat in a Friday bite likely to affect observers nationwide and mark a shift in church practice across parishes and dioceses.
The National Conference of Catholic Bishops ends the mandatory meat abstinence on most Fridays during Lent while preserving Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Catholics may choose penance, but the bishops urge voluntary abstinence from fresh meat. Archbishop Hanna noted sin depends on confession and conscience.
West Virginia University biologist says eyewitness reports of a large bird near Point Pleasant resemble a sandhill crane, noting its height, wing span, and potential aggression. Federal wildlife laws protect migratory birds, and no confirmable eastward record exists. CTK reports American travel agent Vladimir Kazan-Komarek admitted spying for Czechoslovakia before his Oct arrest in Prague. He faces charges of spying high treason and attempted murder. Kazan-Komarek, 42, runs Harvard Travel Service in Cambridge and was seized after a Soviet airliner diverted to Prague due to radar trouble.
Secretary of State Dean Rusk left open a brief Christmas truce in Viet Nam while ruling out a long bombing pause against North Viet Nam. He said decisions would hinge on South Vietnam’s wishes and, to some extent, on the Viet Cong, and the talks touched on Christmas and the Tet new year period.
An 18 year old Dayton resident Linda Pierson was found with her clothes displaced and strangled along an Ohio River bank near Campbell County. Coroner Fred Stine and Commonwealth's Attorney Frank Benton said autopsy results confirmed strangling with no proven link to prior Cincinnati area slayings. Pierson left home Wednesday evening and was reported missing Thursday morning by her mother and stepfather. Three boys discovered the body Thursday night.
Charleston AP State Purchasing Division announced Friday contracts to three out of state firms for salt to the State Road Commission. International Salt Co. of Clarks Summit PA, Cargill Inc. of Minneapolis MN, and Morton Salt Co. of Wadsworth OH won bids averaging 19.36 dollars per ton. Contracts were offered twice due to few competitive bids and ties occurred in over half the cases with each company receiving a purchase order where ties existed.
Aubrey James Norvell an ex hardware salesman from Memphis pleaded innocent to shooting civil rights figure James Meredith on a Mississippi road June 6. De Soto County grand jury charged him with assault and battery with intent to kill and with pointing aiming and discharging a firearm. Meredith the first Negro to enroll at the University of Mississippi was wounded during his march against fear.
Kanawha County grand jury indicted 25 people on election law violations from last May's primary. One defendant, Robert Spencer, faced vote buying charges while 24 others were charged with wilful neglect as precinct officials. Fourteen had prior indictments ruled faulty by Special Intermediate Court Judge Samuel D. Lepinsky. All counts are misdemeanors.
Constance Dianne Lawrence a 20 year old Matoaka resident and former Princeton Bank employee was held for a federal grand jury on embezzlement charges. FBI agents arrested her Friday in Matoaka and she posted a $1000 bond, with a preliminary hearing waived. The crime allegedly occurred between February 15 and August 23 1966 at Princeton Bank and Trust Co. in Bluefield West Virginia. The case is before U S District Court for Southern West Virginia with a April 12 1967 date set for the district court appearance.
