Mr and Mrs Mack G Munsey and children returned from Norton after attending the funeral and burial of Jack Munsey. Wise county deputy sheriff Muncay was slain Sunday night during a gun battle after a hit and run investigation. Services were held at his home and Norton fire department members served as pallbearers.

Payroll gains reflect October employment rise in major sectors
Washington reports a 1.1 percent rise in employment and an 8.8 percent jump in payrolls from September. Coal mining leads with anthracite up 14.4 percent in employment and 42 percent in payrolls, bituminous up 7.4 percent and 25.1 percent respectively. Retail trade employment grows 4.5 percent with 3.9 percent earnings, metalliferous mining up 4.8 percent and 6.8 percent wages, manufacturing up 2.4 percent and 4.7 percent payrolls, while most other groups show smaller gains or declines.
