Gilmore proposal boosts funds for five Virginia counties

A legislative package from Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore would pour about 4.5 million dollars into five area counties for 1999 and 2000. Localities could spend the money on school construction, renovations, teacher salaries, or remediation programs, with sheriff's deputy salaries also funded.

Telemarketing firm to bring 200 jobs to Bluefield area

Rife chosen by GOP to run in 38th district Senate race

In Buchanan County the GOP mass meeting nominated Roger Rife after he defeated Lang Hurley in the decisive third round 277 to 234. Rife, a Garden High School teacher and Buchanan County supervisor chair, will face a Dec 15 special election to fill the unexpired term of state Sen. Jack Reasor.

Puckett wins Democratic nomination for 38th District Senate

In a marathon five-ballot convention at Tazewell Middle School about 800 Democratic delegates from Tazewell and surrounding counties chose Lebanon businessman Philip Puckett over rival David Larimer after sugaring out four other candidates. Puckett secured 53 votes to 44 for Larimer on the final tally, needing 51 of 100 votes.

West Virginia weighs 1.7 billion tobacco settlement decision

West Virginia faces a Friday deadline to decide on a 1.7 billion proposed tobacco industry settlement. Wisconsin youths planned school attack with unlocked gun box

Five Wisconsin boys aged 15 and 16 planned a bloodbath at their school in revenge for teasing. Police said they had access to an unlocked gun box owned by one father and mapped the plan in detail including snipping phone lines and taking top administrators hostage.
