Lights in sky spark grand opening of Mercer Mall theater

On Friday night lights were aimed skyward for Cinemas 8 opening at Mercer Mall, triggering dozens of reports to police, the FAA, TV stations, and media outlets. An astronomic view by Magellan shows Venus with lava domes near Alpha Regio, 15 mile domes up to 2475 feet high.

Readout Week Celebrations Across Bluefield Area

On Monday November 19 Craft Memorial Library Bluefield hosts The Great West Virginia Readout 5 with a remote broadcast and free activities for the public under the theme Readout A Global Experience. The following day November 20 features a Route 460 Tree Planting Project dedication at Route 460 and Leatherwood Lane with refreshments at Acme Supermarket. Later on November 20 Princeton-Mercer County Chamber hosts its 1990 Annual Dinner at Concord College Ballroom with guest speaker Jack Bowman WVU Law professor and awards for citizen, volunteer and business of the year.

Caperton Rumored To Suffer Mood Swings In Albany

Charleston AP reports Gov Gaston Caperton shows wild mood swings and days canceling his schedule, cited by ex aide G C Morse fired earlier after a shove incident. Morse claims serious harm to state and self though Caperton staff deny the remarks as those of a bitter former employee.

Gillespie declines energy commissioner post in West Virginia

Governor Caperton had named Robert Gillespie, president of West Virginia Tech, to be energy commissioner on November 8. Gillespie said he will not accept due to media intrusion and loss of private life, preferring to pursue future state service differently. Police in Bluefield pursue a double stabbing case with two local victims, Christopher Dillard and Artissa Bennett, both stabbed to death. investigators have a suspect and warrants, with possible drug connections. Also, Bluefield Jr. High Band members sent care packages to troops in Saudi Arabia coordinated with VFW Post 9696.

Dental care gets a regional boost

Mercer County Technical Education Center and Wytheville Community College signed an articulation agreement in Dental Assisting. The pact allows TEC students to transfer Dental Assisting classes to the Virginia college program, expanding career options. Attendees included Mercer County officials and WCC leadership.

Fugitives Nabbed in Virginia For Rape Case

Jeffrey Thomas Néely and brother Jonathan Neely were arrested on fugitive warrants for similar charges in Virginia. Returned to Lawrenceville, they face attempted capital murder and rape accusations from a Nov. 10 assault on a woman along Route 1 near Squire. Brunswick County Sheriff P G Brockwell described the alleged attack.

APCo division powers up Bluefield residential customers

Appalachian Power Company Bluefield Division reports a small rise in customers after three years of decline. In the 12 months ending September, the division gained 209 residential customers, bringing total local users to 7,000 and contributing to a statewide Virginia West Virginia tally of 703,744. Division Manager Toby Eaton cites migration to the area as the likely cause while noting service areas in Mercer and Wyoming counties in West Virginia and Tazewell Buchanan and parts of Bland County in Virginia.

Lashmeet official touts county PSD consolidation benefits
