The West Virginia Public Service Commission ordered General Telephone of the Southeast to provide local calling between Matoaka and Princeton in July 1984. The conversion to an all local network will occur by November 23, 1985, with rate increases for residence and business lines and new USS options for usage based charges.
David Andrew Charles Reid a 20 year old Concord College student was shot dead on campus in Athens. Mark Neuman 25 was arrested and held for arraignment in Mercer County circuit court. Reid died at Princeton Community Hospital after being shot twice in the head and once in the chest. A state police spokesman said the shooting stemmed from a feud dating back a year. Neuman was captured at the Twin Towers residence hall and awaits further proceedings.
Norfolk Southern eliminated Southern Railway Appalachia Division at Andover, Virginia, and split its duties between Southern's Tennessee Division at Knoxville and Norfolk and Western's Pocahontas Division at Bluefield. President Harold H. Hall said the changes aim to improve efficiency, noting the Appalachia Division was the smallest. About 110 miles of mainline moved to the Tennessee Division, from Andover to Bulls Gap and to St. Charles. Pocahontas mainline gains 51.5 miles from Wentz to Andover and to Ramsey area, plus several branches: Derby, Roda, Pardee, Pine, Dorchester, Glamorgan, and Dixiana.
