A clashing batch of U S government items show Vice President designate Ford testifying on presidential powers and CIA control while Morton warns of rationing and energy conservation amid Nixon era policy shifts.
Skylab 3 astronauts Gerald P. Carr Edward P. Gibson and William R. Pogue successfully docked with the Skylab space station eight hours after launch. A docking probe initially failed to latch and was realigned with several pushes before linkup. They will live aboard the command ship tonight and move into the station Saturday as the mission proceeds to study the sun earth and human space living conditions.
Mercer County Sheriff Jack Scott reports the county court shelved an $11,000 jail control room project while studying the feasibility of a new jail. He had arranged Roanoke Iron and Bridge Works to build the room and cited financing from the Governors Committee on Crime Delinquency and Corrections with a January 15, 1974 deadline. The project had been partly funded and some improvements already made before the court froze the plan.
West Virginia surface miners, idle due to diesel shortages, returned to work Friday after state action to secure fuel supplies. Ben Lusk, executive director of the West Virginia Surface Mining and Reclamation Association, praised the quick state response and said all operators are back in business.
Bluefield College officials led by Dr. Charles Tyer announced Phase I of a 1.2 million campaign to fund a new 750000 science center, science center equipment, and campus refurbishments including Lansdell Hall and the Men's Residence. The drive aims to reach a 2.5 million five year goal with support from local businesses.
Gov. Arch A. Moore Jr. disputed a legislative panel claim that he mishandled the latest federal revenue sharing check and said he would not dim the Capitol dome lights. He announced a reshaping of the Public Service's leadership while asserting the state met the Oct. 1 reporting rule and that a $6.3 million check had been mailed on Oct. 18.
The diesel fuel shortage for West Virginia coal mines may ease next week after orders from the Interior Department Office of Oil and Gas allow producers, farmers, and mass transit to obtain fuel as needed. Steel Service, which supplies over half of the underground roof belts in the state, seeks a $41 per ton price increase after a federally set price of $144 per ton prompted production cuts. the Cost of Living Council may issue a favorable decision within days if Steel Service files by Monday.
The Mercer County Commission on Aging submits incorporation papers to the West Virginia Secretary of State to form a non profit group. It aims to plan programs for the elderly in Mercer County, support van services, education on aging, and coordinate state and federal aging programs. The group formed after a May Bluefield conference with local organizations and remarks by Rev. Neville Mozingo and Dr. Louise Gerrard.
Washington AP report says two Bureau of Outdoor Recreation grants support Wyoming County projects. Mullens receives 43,591 dollars for a swimming pool, tennis court repairs, fencing and site upgrades with local matching funds. West Virginia’s Twin Falls State Park at Pineville gets 12,000 dollars with local match for park improvements.
