Matoaka town council moved a gross sales tax ordinance toward enactment at a regular meeting. The plan charges businesses 0.5 percent per dollar and public utilities 1 percent, with final action due November 28. Critics allege closed sessions and seek representation by businessmen.
Evarts Kentucky records a rapid chief turnover with Albert Smith returning as chief after a 15 month gap the line of successors including E J Baumgardner who was shot to death and H T Collier who quit after a threat of being shot. Washington bans combat type aircraft from National airport after the Nov 1 crash of a modified P-38 near an Eastern Airlines DC-4. The ban excludes military transports, affects civilian operators, and comes as near misses raise safety concerns around the capital. Notable figures cited include Erick Rios Bridoux, Barkley, Doolittle, McCormick, Turner, and others using surplus warplanes.
Harry Lee Baldwin, a 72 year old Bluefield merchant, died early yesterday after being struck by a vehicle driven by Daniel Dorton Jr., a 25 year old Bluefield Va. man. The accident occurred at 6 15 am on Virginia Ave as Baldwin walked into the street while awaiting a bus. Dorton remained at the scene and faced charges of reckless driving causing death. Baldwin’s wake and funeral plans are listed with Mercer Funeral Home and Graham Christian church rites set for Friday at 2 30 pm.
Five or more freeholders may file a petition for annexation, city attorney Luther G. Scott said. A new law House Bill 278 passed March 11, 1949, reduces petition requirements to five signatures and sets election rules for proposed areas Cumberland Heights Union Street Head of Union and Midway. Each annexation area and the city will hold separate votes with majority in each area required for incorporation.
A B 29 with 20 aboard reportedly ditch ed in the Atlantic off Bermuda while en route from California to Britain. Rescue planes and surface craft searched a vast area with no trace as radar and radio issues hindered locating survivors.

McKinley Stewart 53 of Windom Wyoming county died in Welch WV hospital from injuries in a Windom sawmill accident last Monday.
A Garrett County magistrate ordered John Walburn held on $1000 bond after he was charged with beating his five month old son to stop crying. The baby underwent a delicate brain operation in University Hospital Baltimore and was reported in good condition despite two weeks of unconsciousness. State's Attorney Dwight Stover quoted Mrs Walburn as saying Walburn assaulted the child on October 29 at a Deep Creek cabin. Officers tracked Walburn to Martinsburg, where the infant remained hospitalized.
Washington reports a looming west coast seamen strike as the AFL sailors union of the Pacific prepares a strike vote to be announced Monday. A possible Tuesday walkout could paralyze west coast shipping while east coast deck officers’ strike was averted temporarily with a truce until next Tuesday noon. About a dozen vessels faced picketing in east coast ports, including the Ocean Navigator at Baltimore, with a temporary sailing agreement in place.
Memphis reports Senator K D McKellar aged eighty was hospitalized after slipping into a tub of hot water. He sustained burns to his left arm shoulder and hip. Hospital attendants described his condition as very good.
The deadlocked coal dispute was handed to President Truman as a new strike threat loomed. Cyrus S. Ching said further mediation would be fruitless and a special fact finding board may be proposed for John L. Lewis to accept or Taft-Hartley injunctions could be invoked. The parties remain at an impasse over wages hours welfare funds and fund financing with a December 1 strike deadline.

Sutherland 27 of Dry Fork perished at Pocahontas Fuel No 31 in Amonate. Joseph Banks 34 of unknown origin died in Olga Coal mine at Coalwood West Virginia. Funeral for Tester Saturday at 2 pm in Sugar Grove Baptist Church.
University of Virginia student council pledges to punish guilty students over disturbances after Virginia's football win over Penn on November 5. They require hotel owners to provide names, dates, damages, and other facts to establish evidence, calling the incidents a source of great concern and reflecting discredit on the university.
