Chicago November 16 Jury service is a privilege and a juror cannot be penalized by employers ruled Judge Marcus Kavanaugh. He fined railroad trainmaster R R Huggins $25 plus costs and sentenced him to 60 days in jail for discharging Dorr G Perrin who was absent for twelve days while serving jury duty. Attorney George German appealed and Huggins was released on $500 bail. Assistant state's attorney Elmer E Homgren said he will Fight the appeal.
Herington Kansas November 16 a coroner jury exonerated Sheriff Sydney C Dederick in the shooting death of Mrs Louise Horton a 35 year old Kansas City whiskey runner The jury ruled the officer acted in defense of his life County Attorney William J Scott announced no charges against Dederick Harrie the driver of the liquor car was jailed but no action was yet decided The inquest continues as officials say the sheriff was justified in the fatal shooting
Washington November 16 A possible Supreme Court appeal may be sought to decide if liquor buyers are subject to Volstead Act penalties in addition to liquor transporters. The question arises after a recent federal circuit ruling in Philadelphia interpreted to mean that liquor buyers may face guilt under the act.
President Hoover will convene a White House conference with business and government leaders to map steps to release idle capital and revive investment. Secretary Lamont will present a survey showing 360 million dollars in projects held in abeyance. Officials Mellon Hyde Davis will attend for their departments.
Senate lobby chair Caraway announced an investigation into Fred I. Kent of Bankers Trust over a statement linking the senate coalition’s tariff rewrite to stock market declines. Senator Hawes demanded Kent’s summons calling the claim propaganda. Caraway dismissed the idea as fiction but said the inquiry could proceed after a delay.
Washington Nov 16 The senate approved nine additional duty increases on agricultural products and related items as part of the agricultural schedule. Leaders from both parties backed the measures, with no roll call on about 75 farm duty increases this week. A week-end recess was set amid assurances that night sessions would continue.
Canon City Colorado November 16 five inmates are in solitary confinement suspected of digging a tunnel in the state prison grounds. The tunnel would have eased escape during reconstruction when over 700 prisoners worked and a mutiny on October 3 left thirteen dead. An insider guard reportedly aided the mutiny. the guard's name was kept secret.
John KvAle follows his late father C J Kvale into the Minnesota seat in the house of representatives. The elder Kvale, who took over from Andrew Volstead, was burned to death recently at his summer home.
Washington notes a marked fatigue in Secretary of War James W. Good after emergency appendectomy. Physicians report no septic progression though optimism remains slim. President Hoover stays informed as four days pass with no decisive bulletin. Good, 84 hours into the crisis, has held his own with slight prior improvement and nourishment.
Anniston Alabama Nov 16 Constable Luther Champion of Calhoun county was shot and killed during a raid on a moonshiner fourteen miles from Anniston. Deputy Henry Bryant was wounded as two officers and a third companion fought amid an isolated area. Details are scarce on casualties or arrests.
Official forecasts of general rains banished relief for flood conditions in Alabama. The Coosa passed floodstage while the Tallapoosa showed a slight drop. Cahaba receded from thirty five feet at Centerville as northern rains threatened new high water. The Tennessee River at Decatur rose with flood stage likely.
Charles G Dawes told the British Institute of Journalists dinner that naval powers will meet in January under a Kellogg pact spirit. He praised evolving disarmament talks between Britain and the United States and urged public understanding of naval issues to guide policy.

In Sandusky Ohio on November 16 3 year old Priscilla Shivock of Lorain died after a goose charged at her in a Berlin Heights yard. The Erie county coroner A R Grierson ruled the injuries were minor but the child died of fright almost instantly.
A Virginia mother, Mrs Richard Evelyn Byrd Sr, traveled from the Executive Mansion in Richmond to the South Pole encampment of her son Governor Lacey Byrd and grandson Harry Byrd Jr. The journey honors Richard Byrd as Americans join the voyage with support from Buffalo Evening News and Eleutrie company.
