President Clinton said planning continues for U S participation in an international force as hundreds of thousands of refugees move from a Zaire camp toward Rwanda. Rwanda officials say a rescue operation may no longer be necessary, though UN and Pentagon officials signal possible need for logistical support and airlift capacity. Clinton called the news preliminary good but cautioned over broader intervention.
Vivian arsonists attacked two empty buildings in McDowell County near Kim. At 1 18 p m the Kimball Volunteer Fire Department fought a fire at the old Vivian school and also contained a blaze at the former Peerless Coal Company Store, which functioned as a Vivian post office. Fire crews halted both blazes and investigators continued at the scene.
A blaze in a Shoney's heating and ventilation system on Oakvale Road damaged the restaurant and forced closure for several days. Fire officials reported flames from the rear roof unit and said the arson investigation is ongoing with juveniles being considered suspects as arson counts rise countywide to 37 since October. The state fire marshal and police are examining the scene and surrounding arson cases.
First Century Bank President R W Buz Wilkinson stated the bank properly used parking bondholders funds to pay legal fees, countering Bluefield City Board claims of dipping into the sinking fund. He cited bond ordinance language from 1974 allowing fees and costs tied to the Princeton Avenue Parking Building bond issue.
Lambert WELCH longtime McDowell County Circuit Court clerk Paul Lambert, 75, retires November 15 for health reasons. A Maitland native, Lambert served 18 years as clerk and says he was proud to lead the ticket and top vote-getter in McDowell County elections.
