Community Christmas Tree Signups Begin Friday

Bluefield volunteers start the 101st Little Jimmie campaign with two signup sessions for children. On Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the city auditorium on Stadium Drive parents must show an insurance card such as CHIP or WIC. The program, sponsored by the Bluefield Daily Telegraph, provides a gift bag of toys food a treat a book gloves a toboggan and more for hundreds of area children. The Little Jimmie party is set for Thursday Dec 20 from 4 30 to 6 p.m. at the city auditorium.

Winter Storm Delivers First Snowfall Across Region

A winter storm warning from the National Weather Service Blacksburg covered all region counties on Wednesday as rain sleet and snow were forecast to hamper morning travel. Meteorologist Andrew Loconto said rain would shift to freezing rain and sleet around midnight, creating hazardous driving on secondary roads bridges and overpasses before a cold rain Thursday morning.

Wythe County deputy shot during armed hotel robbery incident

A Wythe County sheriff deputy was shot and seriously injured while an armed robbery suspect was killed in an early morning incident. The deputy, treated at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, was struck during the call near Exit 80 on East Lee Highway. Police said the event began around 12 18 am Wednesday at a hotel location.

Falls Mills Elementary razed for new adult day care center

Falls Mills Elementary School has been demolished to clear space for a $2 million Falls Mills Adult Daycare Center. The project, led by the Appalachian Agency for Senior Citizens with funding from grants and ARC, aims to serve elderly residents with meals activities and event transportation. Crews continue site cleanup after demolition.
