Dayton fire officials reported a 3 year old boy started the Thursday incident by setting his pet dog on fire with a cigarette lighter. District Fire Chief Paul Hemmeter said the boy told a paramedic Toto was bad and Toto bit me I set fire to Toto's tail.
Celebrities including LL Cool J and Carol Channing gathered at the American Cancer Society offices on the eve of the 14th annual Great American Smokeout to urge quitting or never starting smoking. The event featured two dozen figures from TV, stage, sports, music and politics sharing why they gave up tobacco and promoting a 24 hour abstinence.

E. Bruce Heilman chancellor of the University of Richmond spoke to Bluefield’s Leadership Mercer-Tazewell class, urging that leadership can be taught. He announced Richmond plans a School of Leadership Studies and an undergrad degree in leadership, challenging the notion that leadership cannot be learned.
James S Hamm of Reservoir Road says he feels no greater danger after two bodies were found nearby. He does not believe the victims were killed in the area and thinks they were placed there after death. Hamm was away from town when the bodies were discovered.
Bland County Development Corporation members heard progress on major economic projects at the Bastian exit off I-77. Updates covered an Indian museum with reconstructed village, wastewater treatment facility, medical-waste incinerator, and the industrial park. Virginia Tech planners outlined master plans to give presence to a historic culture.
Charleston AP. State offices will implement a smoking ban effective December 1 banning smoking in state owned public buildings and vehicles. Agencies provide a seven part cessation program. exemptions include county boards of education and patients in state hospitals or inmates in state prisons.
Gov Gaston Caperton and former press secretary G C Morse exchanged words and a brief shove after Morse was fired over a critical newspaper article. State police intervened. Caperton said no blows were struck as Morse and the governor cooled off. Morse claimed Caperton shoved first. Caperton denied a fight occurred.
CHARLESTON AP Former state Energy Commissioner Larry George resigned from state end Wednesday over differences with Gov. Gaston Caperton's administration. George was removed last Thursday and offered a new position drafting legislation, but Caperton said Wednesday that George resigned instead.
