Volunteers for the Community Christmas Tree campaign announce the 101st Little Jimmie sign-up days on Friday 3 to 6 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Bluefield city auditorium Stadium Drive. Parents must present a child's insurance card. The event, sponsored by the Bluefield Daily Telegraph, will provide a gift bag to hundreds of local children at the party Thursday December 20 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the city auditorium.

Bluefield Virginia will remain Bluefield after Graham Committee proposed reversing the 1924 name change. A Nov 8 public meeting drew 177 attendees with 154 votes in a test ballot to favor keeping Bluefield. The proposal was tabled as concerns over signage, licenses, and addresses were cited.
Bluefield city board members approved the first reading of ordinances to gradually raise sewage rates over five years and fund upgrades to the aging system. City Attorney Colin Cline cited infrastructure improvements and potential bond financing for sewer extensions and repairs. A second reading and public hearing are planned for December 11.
The National Weather Service in Blacksburg Virginia issued a winter storm watch for Mercer Tazewell Bland Giles and Wythe counties. The watch runs Wednesday evening to Thursday with potential freezing rain sleet rain and snow. Ice could reach light to moderate levels in the Bluefield area overnight temperatures near 31.
The Bluefield City Board of Directors approved a pay raise for police to retain experienced officers who might leave for higher wages elsewhere. The measure, passed at the November meeting, adds about 50 cents an hour and increases the budget by roughly $50,000. City Manager Dane Rideout emphasized competitiveness in pay, training, and equipment to preserve citizen safety and professionalism. Mayor said police are the city's foundation.
