Violinist Tricia Park headlines a community concert at Harman Chapel. The performance features Park's classical repertoire in an intimate venue, drawing local attendees and promoting regional arts programs.
City and state crews install a 650 foot pipeline along Cumberland Road to repair a 30 inch deep ditch where Valma Hammer, 65, was injured in a June 24 crash and died July 8 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center. Project aims to improve safety with gravel graveled cover and concrete. Traffic has slowed during construction as Tony Wagner, Bluefield City Engineer, said completion is expected mid next week depending on weather.
In Narrows Virginia Celanese announces a temporary three week curtailment affecting about 400 workers at the Celco Ace state acetate filament plant starting Friday December 5 due to slow market conditions. The plant is a global acetate producer with 1996 sales of 450 million and operates in the United States Canada Mexico and Belgium.
Federal grand jury indicted Solus Coal Inc and Parts Corporation of America with six others for two fatal mine roof falls. Thomas Layne Kinder and Kimberly Edwards died in 1997 incidents at Solus No 1 and Parts No 4 mines. Brown and Lamie faced charges over the Solus death. Deel and Winebarger over the Parts No 4 case.
Macy McClaugherty School in Pearisburg will undergo a comprehensive interior renovation starting in January. Bids are due December 14. Seven to eight classrooms will relocate to the Pearlsburg Community Center during construction, with a new gym, upgraded heating and cooling, and expanded cafeteria facilities planned.
Giles County hunter Brian Tate found two 11-point bucks locked together in a laurel thicket on Butt Mountain. One deer lay dead, the live buck had mounted the other, and Tate believes the live buck dragged the other for days. The kill occurred on Little Meadows Hunt Club property. Tate is a taxidermist with Wildlife Creations of Pearisburg.
