Springfield Ill Nov 18 One of the most remarkable wife abandonment cases in Sangamon county court history is that of Downing Smelley. Alexander Downing son of a Cotton Hill farmer was indicted for wife abandonment by Laura Smelley a teacher who boarded at the Downing home. They eloped to Chicago using assumed names and married. He later refused to acknowledge the marriage and denied it to his parents. Smelley produced what she claimed as the original license to press the matter before the grand jury which returned the indictment. The trial promised to be sensational.

No Indictment Against Nathan Discharged in Mystery Case
Morris Nathan, arrested in a mysterious case, was discharged from custody as no indictment was found against him. Indictments were returned against Crawford, Howard, Dr McLean the surgeon, and Dean keeper of the Winthrop Street house where the girl died. In Lake City Iowa on November 18 George W Battrick and William Jackson died in a jail fire started by Battrick. J O Hipple and Isaac Allen were also jailed for Sarone log on the trees and were rescued by Marshal Miles. Smoke appeared in the cells and the two men perished before aid reached them while bystanders heard Allen say Battrick tried to ignite the jail.
