Williamsburg Yacht Sells to Seaworthy Bidder at Auction

USS Williamsburg once serving President Truman is offered for sale to the highest bidder willing to fund seaworthiness. A DC Public Works spokeswoman said the vessel has sat near a sewage plant for a year while officials sought a buyer. Crude oil futures fell over $2 as supply concerns outweighed war fears in the Persian Gulf with light crude at 31.87 a barrel.

West Virginia reports drop in adult smoking by 1988

West Virginia adults smoking fell to about 27 percent in 1988, a 13.1 percent drop since 1984, according to a state Health and Human Resources study using Centers for Disease Control data. The report ranks WV sixth among 37 states for smokers and notes tobacco use remains socially acceptable in the state.

Magann receives 61st Distinguished Citizenship Award

Eulalia Magann, a Bluefield resident, is named the 61st Distinguished Citizenship Award recipient by Riley-West Post No. 9 American Legion for outstanding community service. Richmond marks 21st Christmas tree lighting at home

Fred Richmond thanks Thurman Scruggs for help during the 21st annual decoration of a large bluefield pine on Oakhurst Avenue. Helen Mays and Charles Sizemore assisted along with more than 20 others as 32 strands of lights were arranged. The lights will be lit the day after Thanksgiving.

Nine inducted into Mercer Hall of Fame in Bluefield event

Nine Mercer County graduates were honored at a reception at the Bluefield Arts and Crafts Center kicking off American Education Week. Since 1987 the Hall of Fame has inducted 29 graduates who have benefited their professions and communities. This year a representative from Genoa and Park Central joined current eight high schools' inductees.
